Cardiac Rehabilitation and Secondary Prevention Clinic

Clinic description

The Secondary Prevention Clinic is for people who have recently been hospitalized at the Montreal Heart Institute.

Specifically, this clinic is for patients who have been recently hospitalized for:

• Coronary bypass surgery
• Myocardial infarction
• Angina
• Valve surgery

Individual appointments

Consultations with the nurse, dietitian and physician, as well as blood tests and stress tests.

Group classes

Three classes are offered through this clinic to equip patients with a better understanding of coronary artery disease and help them take charge of their health. The group learning format encourages sharing with other participants who are going through the same situation.

To take part in this clinic, you must be a patient at the MHI.

Class 1

• What is coronary artery disease?
• Modifiable risk factors for cardiovascular disease (smoking, cholesterol, diabetes, hypertension, sedentary lifestyle, obesity, stress) and non-modifiable risk factors (age, sex, genetics).
• Explanation of available treatments for coronary artery disease (surgery, angioplasty, medication).
• Becoming aware of stress and its impact on daily life (possibility for patients to take part in a stress reduction workshop given by Dr. Robert Béliveau).

Class 2

• Characteristics and beneficial effects of the Mediterranean diet on risk factors for coronary artery disease.
• The importance and benefits of physical activity (description of interval training and its application for people with coronary artery disease).
• How to resume your regular activities (frequency, intensity, type, duration) following a coronary episode or procedure (heart attack, bypass, dilatation, valve surgery).

Class 3

• Understanding nutrition labelling to make more informed decisions.
• Hypertension and its consequences.
• The treatments, causes and possible consequences of hypertension.
• How to manage your blood pressure.

Approximate duration of the classes: 3 hours

Fitness classes

A supervised gym workout is offered twice a week for a 12-week period.

The benefits of being physically active greatly outweigh the risks.
