Your anesthesiologist is a medical doctor who has completed five years of training in anesthesiology and additional subspecialty training to become an expert in care of patients prior to, during, and after cardiac surgery. During your operation, he works with an assistant, an inhalational therapist, to take care of you. He is in constant communication with the inhalational therapist, surgeon, perfusionist and nurses in order to provide the optimal care for you.
The department of anesthesiology of the Montreal Heart Institute seeks to provide excellence in patient care, education, research, innovation and professional development. Implicit in these goals are the person-oriented values of respect, understanding, and the importance of communication for the patients, our community and for the medical and paramedical personnel with whom we work. Best care, also, can only be achieved by a constant academic reevaluation through quality control, pursuing and developing new research ideas, and participating actively in innovation and technological development. In addition, in order to improve patient care on a regional, national and international level the department strives to be leaders in teaching and education in cardiovascular anesthesiology and perioperative care. Through a multidisciplinary approach and by preclinical research and postclinical reevaluation, teaching and information sharing with other large research and clinical centres, and constant innovation providing new therapeutic approaches, the department of anesthesiology seeks to optimize patient safety now and in the future.
