By integrating the huge amount of circulating information regarding the prevention of cardiovascular diseases and chronic diseases in general in one single location, the objective of the Montreal Heart Institute (MHI) Observatoire de la prévention is to become a reference site where the general public, reporters, physicians and policy makers can find reliable information clearly summarized. The Observatoire aims to play its part in influencing economical and social policies so as to improve everybody’s health.

“The mission of the Observatoire de la prévention will be to promote the primary and secondary prevention of cardiovascular diseases in order to prolong life expectancy in good health. Scientific watch and knowledge dissemination are the Observatoire two main activities,” says Dr. Martin Juneau, cardiologist, Director of Prevention and Director of the Montreal Heart Institute’s EPIC Centre (the MHI’s Centre for prevention and cardiac rehabilitation). The Observatoire collects and synthesizes the latest medical research regarding several topics related to the prevention of cardiovascular and chronic diseases, with a particular emphasis on the effects of food and physical activity. According to Dr. Denis Roy, cardiologist and Executive Director of the MHI, “Special attention is given to certain public interest issues, such as the obesity and diabetes epidemics currently sweeping through our planet, as well as to various nutritional controversies, such as the role of sugars and fats in the development of cardiovascular diseases.”

The Institute’s Observatoire de la prévention is part of the Direction of Prevention of the MHI and was implemented in partnership with the MHI Foundation and the Joy of Eating Better Foundation. “Through the ‘$2 does the heart good’ Campaign, the IGA grocers and their clients were able to raise an important amount to fund the Observatoire de la prévention. Thanks to their generosity, their commitment and dedication, they are contributing in a major way to the innovation of the Montreal Heart Institute”, emphasizes Mr. Henri-Paul Rousseau, Chair of the MHI Foundation Board.
