After earning her medical degree in 1972 from the Faculty of Medicine at Université de Montréal, Dr. Mercier received specialty certification in cardiology in 1978. She completed her training in echocardiography at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota.
Dr. Mercier then started her career in clinical cardiology and echocardiography, and in 1989 she founded and then directed the Adult Congenital Heart Disease Centre at the Montreal Heart Institute.
