Dr. Joël Lavoie did his bachelor of science in biochemistry (1985) and his doctorate in neurological sciences (1991) at Université de Montréal. He was in the first cohort of residents to receive a postdoctoral degree in clinical biochemistry in 1991, and he received certification from the Canadian Academy of Clinical Biochemistry in 1997.
Chief of the Medical Biochemical Service at the Montreal Heart Institute since 2000, Dr. Lavoie is responsible for professional and scientific activities for this department, which provides services in general biochemistry, blood gases, cardiac markers, pharmacology, endocrinology, and molecular biology along with point-of-care testing (POCT).
In 2008, he went into technology transfer and started up a #clinical molecular biology laboratory# dedicated to hereditary heart conditions.
He has particular expertise in implementing the CAN/CSA-Z15189-#03# standard.
Dr. Lavoie has developed a number of partnerships in basic and clinical research to create protocols for the treatment, preservation and analysis of specimens for local and multicentre research projects.
