Emergency care

Every year, the MHI emergency service evaluates 14,000 patients presenting with a vast array of pathologies. Backed by an experienced support team, the emergency physician works in a calm, well-designed facility furnished with the best equipment (centralized monitors with memory and analysis capacity, etc.). The ER physician also benefits from an absolutely unique logistical support structure: a primary-care cardiologist is available at all times and a comprehensive range of state-of-the-art services are literally within arm's reach (interventional cardiology, electrophysiology, echocardiography, nuclear cardiology and stress tests). When necessary, the ER physician may consult specialists in other disciplines as well as social workers, nutritionists, etc.

The MHI emergency service is a tertiary cardiology facility that allows students to gain exposure to a complete range of heart conditions; this makes it a unique training environment where students can hone their skills. The emergency service offers four-week rotations to students and residents in family medicine and emergency care from Quebec universities. The aim of this rotation is to familiarize the student or resident with the principal cardiological problems encountered in a cardiac emergency service.

During the rotation, courses are given by emergency physicians; in addition, students or residents may also attend certain courses related to their practice given by cardiologists or cardiology residents. The rotation also allows them to spend a few hours in the various cardiac investigations labs, if they wish.

How to apply for a rotation (document available in French only)

Medical students from the Université de Montréal and other Quebec universities must fill out a clerkship application form from their faculty and fax it to the administrative office of the MHI teaching division. Applications are then forwarded to the Université de Montréal for final approval. Quebec residents are required to apply for clinical rotations through the directors of their programs. For more on how to apply for residency positions, candidates from Quebec and Canada are invited to consult the Université de Montréal Web site.
