Hypertension Clinic

Program description

Blood pressure refers to the amount of pressure exerted by the blood on the artery walls. In any one person, blood pressure will fluctuate somewhat from day to day or even over the same day. It tends to be lower at night and higher by day. Emotions can also cause blood pressure to vary. When blood pressure remains chronically high, this is called “hypertension.”

Hypertension cannot usually be cured; however, it can be controlled through lifestyle modifications (diet, physical activity, etc.) and medication.

Target clients

The Hypertension Clinic is open to members of the ÉPIC Centre who have a one-year subscription. Anyone interested must be referred by a physician and have blood pressure that is uncontrolled despite medication.

Individual appointments

Consultations with the nurse, dietitian, kinesiologist and physician, as well as blood tests and stress tests.

Patients registered with this clinic may have their blood pressure continuously monitored over a 24-hour period with an ambulatory blood pressure monitor (AMBP). This test is very effective in diagnosing hypertension, as it provides a more precise picture of the variations in blood pressure during the day and night. The team can then determine the optimal treatment.

Group classes

Three classes are offered through this clinic. Their purpose is to inform patients so that they can better control their hypertension and take charge of their health.

Class 1

• The features and benefits of the Mediterranean diet for cardiovascular health.
• The importance and benefits of physical activity (description of interval training and its application for people with hypertension).
• Appropriate practice of physical activity (frequency, intensity and duration).

Class 2

• Understanding nutrition labelling to make informed decisions.
• The causes and consequences of uncontrolled hypertension.
• Therapeutic treatments of hypertension.
• How to take an accurate reading of your blood pressure.
Approximate duration of the classes: 3 hours

Class 3

Patients registered in this clinic have the opportunity to take part in a stress reduction workshop given by Dr. Robert Béliveau, which includes one hour of theory and one hour of relaxation.

Physical activity

Patients of the Hypertension Clinic may participate in any of the classes offered on the ÉPIC Centre schedule. The classes are given by kinesiologists, who are specialists in disease prevention and physical activity.

Facts about hypertension

The consequences of untreated hypertension are many and potentially fatal: stroke, heart attack, heart failure, end-stage renal failure, atrial fibrillation, left ventricular hypertrophy and premature death.

To keep hypertension in check, several lifestyle modifications are needed. The recipe is actually quite simple: limit alcohol consumption, abstain from nicotine, maintain a healthy body weight, reduce salt intake, and engage in regular physical activity.
