The MHI's Hospital Biobank - Participants

Why create this biobank?
Cardiovascular diseases are the leading cause of mortality in developed countries. The risk factors for this disease are well known and include lifestyle-related factors such as high cholesterol, hypertension, diabetes, smoking, diet, obesity and inactivity.
There are also risk factors over which we have no control, including age, sex and genetic profile (or heredity). While the link between genetics and cardiovascular disease is now undisputed, several aspects remain unexplained owing to the complexity of the phenomenon.
Who can participate?
All persons who have used or are using MHI services are eligible to be part of the hospital cohort Biobank, regardless of whether they have cardiovascular problems or not. Persons who have the Institute’s red card are eligible. The researchers will thus be able to observe the progress of the participants’ medical condition for the duration of their lives by referring to their medical records and to MHI and government databases.
What does participation involve?
A research nurse will meet with patients to explain what participation involves. Participants will be asked to read and sign a consent form, provide a blood sample (non-fasting) and answer questionnaires, including questionnaires related to medical and family history. In all, taking part in the Biobank requires about two hours of one’s time.
