Prevention Clinic

The Prevention Clinic's mission is to promote cardiovascular health.

To date, the proposed prevention program is intended for those recently hospitalized at the Montréal Heart Institute and their families, as well as members of the ÉPIC Centre who have suffered a recent cardiac event. The purpose of the program is to allow optimal cardiac rehabilitation and to reduce the risk of future cardiac problems.

The approach taken is both personalized and global, meaning it takes into account all of the risk factors for cardiovascular disease, which are as follows:

  1. high cholesterol
  2. hypertension
  3. diabetes
  4. smoking
  5. obesity
  6. sedentary lifestyle
  7. stress.

The program, offered free of charge, is spread out over a period of four months and includes:

  • Individual meetings with a nurse, dietician, kinesiologist and physician.
  • A group course on healthy lifestyle habits.
  • A gym-based fitness class.

The group course on healthy lifestyle habits consists of three classes of 2.5 hours each spread out over three consecutive weeks. A fourth class is offered to patients with diabetes.

Class 1:

The heart and risk factors for heart disease/Medication (physician)
     Changing your lifestyle habits (nurse)

Class 2:
      Healthy diet (part 1) (dietician)
      Stress management (nurse)

Class 3:
      Healthy diet (part 2) (dietician)
      Resuming physical activity (kinesiologist)

Class 4:
      Diabetes (nurse, dietician)

As for the gym-based fitness class, it consists of one hour of exercise in the gym at the ÉPIC Centre, twice a week for a period of eight weeks.
