3 things to do to maintain a healthy heart

Think of Your Heart chronicles by , November 5, 2012 - 15:15

Firstly, it is essential to stop smoking.  It is by far the best thing you can do for your health in general and also to prevent a heart problem, a stroke or cerebrovascular accident, cancer or a respiratory disease.

Secondly, pay attention to your diet.  Eat more fruits and vegetables, between 5 and 10 portions per day.  Opting for whole grain cereals, eating more legumes and nuts, and reducing sugar and salt should also be the rule.  Ideally, you should limit your intake of commercially prepared meals:  they contain more sugar, more salt and more bad fats than the ones prepared at home and, furthermore, you can choose your ingredients according to your preferences.

Finally, take 30 minutes each day for walking or any other moderate physical activity.  This 30-minute period can be divided into three sessions of 10 minutes each.  According to studies, Canadians spend on average 20 hours per week watching television, or approximately three hours a day.  Incorporating 30 minutes of physical activity in your day should therefore be possible.  It is a matter of priority.
