Eligibility requirements

In all post-graduate clinical training programs, candidates are called upon to perform clinical acts with patients; first, however, they must obtain the title of clinical fellow.

To obtain this title, candidates must meet the following requirements:

  • They must hold a scholarship from a recognized organization, as these positions are restricted to scholarship holders;
  • They must have a very good knowledge of French. The MHI is a francophone hospital and all of its clinical activities take place in French. MHI patients are francophone, the medical record notes are written in French and all meetings are conducted in French;
  • They must pay the tuition fees required by Université de Montréal;
  • They must have passed either the Medical Council of Canada examination or the American equivalent, the US Medical Licensing Examination (step II) required by the Collège des médecins du Québec.

However, candidates may be exempt from the examination if:

  1. they hold a specialist's certificate allowing them to practise in their country;
  2. they present a letter of recommendation from the dean of the faculty of medicine where they are pursuing their training or have already completed it, and a letter of recommendation from the dean of the faculty of medicine of Université de Montréal.

Candidates are strongly advised to submit their applications more than 18 months in advance, as the process of obtaining the title of clinical fellow can be a lengthy one.

For more information on the title of clinical fellow, please consult the Université de Montréal Web site.
