Missions

Care, research, teaching, prevention

Affiliated with Université de Montréal, the Montreal Heart Institute is an ultraspecialized hospital centre dedicated to care, research, teaching, prevention, rehabilitation and the assessment of new technologies in cardiology.

The MHI's missions in action

To illustrate the missions of the Montreal Heart Institute in concrete terms, the Quebec mortality rate due to circulatory system diseases decreased from 450 to 150 for every 100,000 people between 1980 and 2005. This victory is a result of many factors related to investment in health care, and the MHI has played a key role thanks to its core missions.

Money invested in research has given rise to avenues for therapies that are less invasive and more effective. Funds invested in care led to a major decrease in hospitalizations in Quebec between 1995 and 2005 thanks to angioplasty procedures, defibrillator implantations, and heart failure medication.

In terms of prevention, heart disease and cardiac mortality have been slowed down thanks to awareness about healthy lifestyles and the treatment of cholesterol and hypertension. The teaching mission of the Montreal Heart Institute is to train a large number of specialists in Quebec and Canada and around the world.

Care

At all times, the MHI aims to provide superior-quality care that is based on the latest cardiology practices and changing client needs and that is provided in a patient-focused clinical organization. In light of the aging of the population, an approach adapted to seniors is an integral part of the care provided at our institution.

Research

Despite a gradual and on-going decrease in cardiovascular mortality, cardiovascular disease remains the leading cause of death in North America. Progress over the past three decades in this field has come about through research. By participating in a number of breakthrough discoveries, MHI researchers have contributed to these important advances.

With an annual budget of $50 million, the MHI Research Centre enjoys a strong reputation. It is the largest cardiology research centre in Quebec and Canada. It has 625 employees, including 80 researchers and nearly 125 students. Staff perform clinical, basic and applied cardiology research in many fields, such as surgery, radiological and nuclear imaging, psychiatry, psychology, biology and many others.

Prevention

Preventing cardiovascular disease is an important component of the Institute's mission. In fact, the MHI is a leader in this area. Since 2004, the role of the Prevention Division has been to develop and apply major orientations in the prevention of cardiovascular disease. The ÉPIC Centre, the MHI's centre for preventive medicine, is the cornerstone of our prevention initiatives and activities. Each year, nearly 5,000 people take part in primary and secondary prevention programs at the largest cardiovascular rehabilitation and prevention centre in Canada.

Teaching

Acquiring and sharing knowledge in the field of cardiology is one of the building blocks for improving care quality and accessibility and is a key element of the MHI's reputation. The Montreal Heart Institute's international renown in training and specialization in cardiovascular disease ensures that students will get extremely high-quality instruction from expert teachers who are respected in their fields. The majority of cardiologists and cardiac surgeons who practise in Quebec have trained at the MHI, which annually receives approximately 50 medical students from Université de Montréal and approximately 60 residents in eight specialties.
