Volume of electrophysiology activities
The Electrophysiology Department has one laboratory occupying
two rooms. The MHI was the first centre in Canada in 1999 to use an
endocavitary mapping system.
This sophisticated system makes it possible to precisely locate
within a few millimetres the site of origin of arrhythmias such as
auricular tachycardia, auricular flutter, auricular fibrillation
and ventricular tachycardia.
The Department also operates two specialized clinics: the
Pacemakers-Defibrillators Clinic, where patients with either device
attend for follow-up; and the Arrhythmia Clinic, where patients
attend either for a new consultation or for follow-up of complex
arrhythmic problems.
In 2002-2003, out of a total of 1,604 interventions, 591
related to permanent pacemakers; 325 consisted of
electrophysiological studies; 298 involved catheter ablation of
arrhythmias; 249 related to defibrillators, and 141 interventions
fell under separate categories.
