The Laboratory in Genetics and Genomic Medecine of
Inflammation

The Laboratory in Genetics and Genomic Medecine of
Inflammation is an academic research laboratory thet aims
to take a comprehensive look at multiple inflammatory
diseases to elucidate the biological mechanisms that are
involved in disease suscpetibility, disease progression and
response to therapy.

The Laboratory in Genetics and Genomic Medecine of Inflammation
develops and applies novel approaches for identifying genetic risk
factors for common diseases. The diseases under study affect the
cardiovascular (e.g. atherosclerosis, systemic lupus erythematosus,
etc.), gastrointestinal (e.g. Crohn's disease, ulcerative
colitis), articular (e.g. rheumatoïde arthritis), and nervous
(e.g. multiple sclerosis). All of these diseases share the feature
of having chronic inflammation.
Evidence from clinical characterization to genetic studies
suggests that some of the pathological processes will be unique to
a given inflammatory disease, while others may be common to a
subset of the diseases. The goal of our research is therefore to
identify both the unique and the common genetic risk factors of
these diseases.
The goals of these genetic and genomic studies are
to :
- Identify genetic and non-genetic risk factors of
disease
- Identify clinically relevant biomarkers of
disease
- Identify genetic risk factors controlling response to
therapy
- Identify molecular mechanisms involved in disease
pathology
- Identify novel therapeutic targets
Some of the approaches undertaken to achieve these goals
are :
- Genome-wide linkage studies
- Comprehensive study of the patterns of genetic variation
- Targeted and genome-wide genetic association studies
- Targeted and genome-wide expression studies
- Bioinformatic approaches to data integration
Our group leads and takes part in large national and
international studies and is funded by the Foundation of the
Montreal Heart Institute, the Université de Montréal, the
U.S. National Institutes of Health (NIDDK and NIAID), The Crohn's
and Colitis Foundation of America, and the Canadian Foundation for
Innovation.
