Interventional cardiology

The interventional cardiology service brings together 14 cardiologists and features four cardiac intervention suites where some 6,700 procedures are carried out per year, including 2,700 angioplasties.  Intravascular ultrasound and complex angioplasty using a variety of intracoronary devices (rotablator, brachytherapy, laser, etc.) are routinely performed.  In addition, the MHI has a large primary angioplasty program for acute infarction (500 cases/year). Over the years, the MHI has also developed a specialized percutaneous intervention program for mitral valvuloplasty, interatrial septal defect closures, septal embolization and periprosthetic regurgitation closure. The department runs a very active research program.

The interventional cardiology service offers a one- or two-year fellowship, depending on the candidate's previous experience. All fellows take part in clinical and research activities and are expected to be available for on-call duty in general cardiology at the hospital.

To obtain funding, candidates are advised to apply for grants from recognized agencies. The Department of medicine at the MHI offers scholarships; however, a limited number of scholarships are available and they are awarded on a competitive basis.
