Cardiac Remodelling

Angelino Calderone , Ph. D.

The primary objective is to elucidate the molecular and cellular events associated with the development of cardiac hypertrophy and scar formation post myocardial infarction. We have identified the presence of neural stem cells in the infarct region of the damaged rat heart. The physiological role of neural stem cells in scar formations remains to be determined.

Nestin (a marker of neural stem cells; red flourescence) and neurofilament-M
(green flourescence) fibres were identified innervating the infarct region of the damaged rat heart.
